The Story of Dann’s House: Where All Positive Steps Are Celebrated

The Dann’s House mission is based on human dignity and compassion for those in need. Dann’s House is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization that provides unique, supportive housing in a safe environment in a community atmosphere for men who have experienced chronic homelessness and Chronic Alcohol Syndrome. 

Alcohol abstinence is not required at Dann’s House, where the Harm Reduction Model is followed. Residents are accepted and assisted without judgement or assumption. They reside in a safe, stable home in Traverse City, freeing them from challenges of living on the streets or at the Pines. Residents share and support each other. Dann’s House has found increased support in the Grand Traverse community, despite initial skepticism. Recovery is neither expected nor required, but it does happen.

In 2011, Central pastors, church members and community leaders met to share ideas and initiate the mission. Dann’s House has been in operation since 2014 and is supported by a paid staff member and several volunteers who monitor the health and goals of each resident to bring about life improvement and stability. Residents are provided with private bedrooms and shared access to living areas in the house.

Funding for Dann’s House is provided by individual donors and area faith-based organizations. Central is a primary supporter. Funding is also provided by the Northern Michigan Regional Entity that promotes behavioral health and the reduction of substance abuse. Northern Michigan Supportive Housing works to end homelessness, promotes mental wellness, and provides individual caseworkers for Dann’s House residents.
